The US move to open up its embassy in Jerusalem had finally blown the lid off the cauldron, revealing the truth about the perils and devastating consequences of the contentious move the world in general and the Muslim world in particular had anticipated, forewarned in advance. Notwithstanding the serious concerns voiced by the world’s highest body the United States went on with its decision to shift the embassy to the holy city of Jerusalem that remains at the center of conflict between Israel and Palestine.
It may be recalled here that the UN General Assembly during its emergency meeting, held in last December 2017, overwhelmingly adopted a resolution asking nations not to locate diplomatic missions in the historic city of Jerusalem, as delegates warned that the recent decision by the United States to do so risked igniting a religious war across the already turbulent Middle East and even beyond.
Unfortunately, the United States, in contravention to the UN resolution, set a dangerous precedent by blatantly ignoring the world opinion about a predictable disaster in the conflict-hit region. The recent killings and outpouring of anger from Palestinians in Gaza serves as a grim reminder of how catastrophic it could be for the region’s peace and stability. More than 60 Palestinians were killed at Gaza border when 40,000 Palestinians marched toward a border fence defended by Israeli soldiers. The Israelis responded with live ammunition, killing more than 60 Palestinians and injuring another 2,400. As the poor Palestinians are dying the Israel is celebrating the US embassy move and shamelessly defending the massacre in Gaza but what is even more appalling is that the US has been defending its decision and the reckless violence perpetrated by the Israeli troops against Palestinian protesters. At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council Nikki Haley, Donald Trump’s ambassador to the UN, criticized the protesters, saying the embassy’s opening was no cause for anger.
The fact is that instead of strengthening peace building and conflict resolution process the US has opened a new war front that is bound to create anarchy besides pushing the region into a quagmire of uncertainty. The Trump administration’s lopsided approach and indifference towards the sufferings of Palestinians is something that is highly irresponsible and dangerous as the carnage in Gaza, which is seen as the start of new round of violence, would not only escalate tension in Middle East but it is bound to deepen the wedge between the Muslim world and the West. In such a situation it is moral and legal responsibility of the Muslim world to come forward in a big way and mobilize the global community to seek a just and peaceful settlement of the issue.
