New Delhi : A committee constituted by Delhi High Court has confirmed torture of Kashmiri prisoners inside the high security Tihar jail in the Indian capital.
The panel has found that the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) personnel have beaten as many as 18 jail inmates of Tihar jail. The inmates include Syed Shahid Yusuf, the son of prominent Kashmiri freedom leader Syed Salahuddin.
On Monday, the Delhi High Court had directed the Tihar jail authorities to get all the victims specially treated at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.
The High Court had termed as very disturbing the attack on the inmates lodged in a high-risk ward in jail number-1 of the jail on the night of November 21.
“We need to take a call. It (the incident) is completely unjustifiable,” a bench of acting-Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar had said. “If this is the situation in Delhi, what about other places,” wondered the bench.
It said that the issue was “extremely serious” and required a “serious probe”, before an intervention by this court. It also appointed a three-member fact-finding committee, headed by a district judge of a trial court, to enquire into the incident and submit a report before it.
The high court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by advocate Chinmay Kanojia, who stated that his client Shahid Yousuf, currently being investigated by India’s National Investigation Agency and undergoing trial, was beaten up without any reason by the Tihar Jail staff.
The plea said that Kashmiri detainees including Shahid Yousuf were being targeted by the jail staff causing serious injuries to him and others.
The incident sent shock waves throughout occupied Kashmir and one and all condemned the action of the jail authorities which was in violation of the law and jail manual.
