Provision of clean drinking water & sanitation a new challenge

Rawalpindi: (Parliament Times) Director-General Local Government and Community Development Department, Punjab Mr. Javed Mehmood Bhatti has stressed the need for effective implementation of Water Supply and Sanitation Regulations promulgated to ensure provision of clean drinking water to the citizens which would prevent themselves from water born disease and other fatal ailments including hepatitis, daihreoa ,gastroenterology.

He stated this while addressing two day training workshop of Local Government Officers/Officials on Water Supply & Sanitation Regulations held at Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The Seminar was organized by Local Government & Community Development Department with the cooperation of WASH Programme UNICEF Pakistan. Superintendent Engineer Local Government Mir Abdul Waheed Humayun, Director Local Government Ikhlaq Ahmed Warraich, Deputy Directors Local Government Muhammad Zaman Wattoo, A. D. Najmi, Local Government Officers of Municipal Corporations and Committees.

Addressing on the occasion, DG Javed Bhati asked field officers of Local Government Departments to keep close liaison elected representative of Local Bodies and disseminate the knowledge learn in training a capacity building workshops and also involve community for creating awareness about observing basic principles of hygiene and sanitation.
He asked for proper chlorination of water and observing basic principles of hygiene and also appreciated the role of United Nations Organizations for supporting the professional capabilities of Local Government Officers who had been acting as focal persons in both rural and urban areas and supervising the community projects especially relating provision of water and sanitation.
Engineer Ghulam Murtaza,Tajamul Husssain and Shakeel Badshah presented papers about Water Supply and Sanitation Regulations, Public Health Environment and Drinking Water Quality, Water Quality and its monitoring, water quality parameters, microbiology of water and its removing, disinfection of water by chlorination, orientation on chlorine preparation, chlorine calculation for direct and storage water, pre and post session question on chlorine. Certificates were distributed among the participants of workshop.
