Rawalpindi: (Parliament Times) The emergency of Benazir Bhutto Hospital has gone non-operational due to shortage of staff, amid the reports that four operation theaters have been closed.
According to media reports , the government had spent Rs250 million on the construction of new emergency, however, the vacant posts have not been filled even after two and half years of its construction. .
When complaints came to surface, the hospital administration forwarded an okay report to senior management by saying that emergency has been made operational. Only one Operation Theater is operational among the five due to shortage of staff.
An official on condition of anonymity said that over 80 posts including of experts are still lying vacant for the last two and half years, while recruitment on political grounds is only being made.
A person accompanying the patient said that patients coming for Emergency Ward for operation are referred to main operation theaters of Orthopedic, surgery and gyne department, where dates of four month to seven months are given.
The patients are protesting against lengthy dates for operation, closure of operation theaters in emergency Ward and non checking of patients by the doctors .
Medical Superintendent (MS) Doctor Arshad Ali was contacted several times, however, he was not available for comment.
Benazir Bhutto Hospital Duty Officer said that the provincial health officers have been informed in writing about shortage of staff , however, process will start after the required approval from higher-ups is accorded.
