Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Multan Metro Bus project. The project has been completed at a cost of over Rs 28 billion. The route of metro bus service is from Bahauddin Zakariya University to Chowk Kumharanwala. There are 21 stations and one under pass on the route of bus service.Ninety seven thousand commuters are likely to avail the facility daily.Speaking at the ceremony, PM Sharif said the Multan Metro bus project had been completed in the minimum time possible and work would start soon on the remaining part of the project. He said contrary to the suggestions of many, the government decided to set the Multan Metro bus fare at Rs20, because the same is charged in Lahore and Islamabad.The premier iterated that the project will greatly benefit the underprivileged of Multan, saying “i don’t understand how they travelled” before.In an indirect reference to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan, the PM said governments of other provinces promised to build a naya Pakistan but their cities had no “Metro bus or efficient transport”.The premier earlier took a ceremonial ride on one of the buses to formally kick off the service, which will initially operate 35 buses.It included 21 bus stations spread over an 18.5km route, which are expected to facilitate 97,000 commuters daily, he said.The project’s technical adviser, Sabir Khan Sadozai, claimed that the project was technically faultless. He said as many as 2,600 jobs would be created over time due to the project.He informed that the project had been divided into nine phases, and that Rs356 million had been paid to various departments for the shifting of various services on the route. Citizens of Multan heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday as the much-anticipated Metro Bus service was launched to ease traffic woes in the City of Saints.A large number of people took rides on the cheap and comfortable bus service on the first day of the mass transit project, constructed at a cost of Rs28.88 billion. Out of this, Rs4.5 billion alone has been spent on land acquisition. The Metro route spans over 18.5 kilometres with 12.5 kilometres elevated section – the longest elevated track in Pakistan. The buses are equipped with high-speed WiFi connections. The service is expected to be used by 95,000 people every day. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the bus service was a milestone in the progress and development of southern Punjab region. He said the first phase of the Metro Bus has been completed while the second phase would start shortly and every possible effort would be made to complete it in 2017. Shehbaz said the government faced harsh criticism when it launched the Lahore- Islamabad Motorway in the 90s. Project has enhanced the beauty the city and it is reported that Multan Metro Bus project better than Lahore and Islamabad. PML-N Government deserves credit for launching Multan Metro Bus Service. Modern infrastructure is a key to progress, therefore, both Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif have focused on this aspect and achieved major successes. Metro projects have helped resolve problem of traffic congestions.
