Plane crash kills 66 passengers in Iran

Tehran : A plane crash in southern Iran has killed all 66 passengers on board, Iran’s Aseman Airlines spokesman told state TV on Sunday Morning.
The Fars news agency said the plane crashed near the remote mountain town of Semirom, some 620km south of the capital, Tehran.
The report identified the plane as an ATR-72, which was flying from Tehran to the southern Iranian city of Yasuj. Under decades of international sanctions, Iran’s commercial passenger aircraft fleet has aged, with air accidents occurring regularly in recent years.
An Aseman Airlines flight with 60 passengers and six crew on board crashed in a mountainous area near the town of Samirom, Isfahan province.
The crash of the plane, belonging to the Asseman Airlines, took place near the city of Semirom, Isfahan Province, Pir-Hossein Kolivand Head of Iran’s Emergency Medical Services told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Sunday. ‘About 60 passengers were on board,’ Kolivand said.
The plane left Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport at 5:00 local time (1:30 GMT) and disappeared from radar screens after a while. The 20-year-old ATR plane carrying dozens of passengers from Tehran to Yasuj, in southwestern Iran and the capital of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, after disappearing from flight radar on Sunday morning, went down in Samirom, Isfahan province.
A spokesman for the Iranian emergency organization said it was not possible to send ambulances to the mountainous area, but choppers are being deployed. Witnesses informed local media that it appeared the plane was trying to make an emergency landing on a pasture when it crashed.
